M G Shahani and Company Private Limited is a distributing and marketing company that has been in existence for over 75 years. It has been associated with companies such as Colgate Palmolive, Titan Watches and Hindustan Petroleum and has branches and associates in 11 cities across the country. Though not a multinational its strengths are multi-local.

The beginning: Crossing Borders
Importers:

The company began as a partnership that was set up in Karachi in 1920. At that time, they were importers of consumer goods from USA and Europe-primarily toileteries, fragrances, OTC pharmaceuticals, hair dyes, stationery and shaving equipment.

By 1940, the company had selling and distribution centres at Karachi, Lahore, Bombay, Delhi, Clacutta and Rangoon, as well as purchasing offices in London and New York.

In 1947, after partition, the company moved to India, converting the former branches into separate limited companies under the joint management of the original partners.

Growth and Challenge

Distributors
Because of an increase in demand for their services, the company opened offices and distribution centres at Jaipur, Kanpur, Chandigarh, Jalandar, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad, Ernakulam, Chennai, and Ottupalam.

Today, these branches are self sufficient in themselves. They have an independent sales force which handles distribution of “Gala of London” cosmetics, household insecticide “Finit” ( manufactured by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited), aroma therapy products – Aromamagic and ayurvedic products – Janet.

Warehousing Agents

The company manages warehouses for Colgate Palmolive Limited, in Northern India. This association with Colgate Palmolive is more than five decades. During this period MGS has acquired rich experience in Management and Control of modern, totally computerised, warehousing facilities. MGS has done C&F work for Titan Watches and some National Companies manufacturing chocolates, biscuits, toileteries and garments.

Manufacturing

In 1985, the company set up a state-of-the-art manufacturing unit for toileteries in Faridabad. This unit specializes in contract-manufacturing of Shampoos, Brilliantine and moisturizing cream.
