It is the amount of cadmium that is present in the ornament. 24 carat implies there is 100% gold. 22 carat implies there is 91.6% gold, the remaining being cadmium alloy. Hence it is called 916 KDM. 18 carat implies there is 75% gold the remaining being cadmium.
Advantages of 22 carat Ornaments
24 carat is not ideal for soldering.
For joints and soldering in gold ornaments, cadmium is used. The advantage being that while remelting of the old ornament the gold content will not be lost. Cadmium will evaporate and will not mix with the gold.
The best option for soldering is a 22 carat because of the maximum gold content present.
Reselling of 22 carat gold gives more value.
